A JEEPNEY robbery was preempted by the presence of four covert policemen, while a snatcher was arrested by two rookie policemen in separate incidents last Tuesday and Wednesday.

The four covert policemen—or secret marshals—were on board an SM-bound jeepney at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday when two men, who turned out to be robbers, boarded the jeepney in the North Reclamation Area.

Sensing the presence of the policemen, the two quickly disembarked from the jeepney and headed to Sitio Tabay.

The covert policemen followed suit and ended up chasing the duo.

They arrested one of the suspects, identified as Jimroy B. Ponce, 24, of Canjulao, Lapu-Lapu City, for possession of a seven-inch knife and one small pack of shabu.

The other suspect, who was only identified as Richie, managed to escape.

Ponce’s arrest was the first recorded accomplishment of the secret marshals whose deployment began about a week ago, when a robber shot and killed a student aboard a jeepney in Cebu City. His reason: She refused to give up a cell phone.

Apart from testing the marshals plan, police officials also reviewed the deployment of visiting police operatives, who are in Cebu for field training and for security preparations for an international summit in December.

After the marshals scored this week, some police recruits followed suit.

At 11:40 a.m. Wednesday, a snatcher was arrested by two rookie policemen who conducted a beat patrol in the areas of P. del Rosario St. near the Land Bank of the Philippines and Junquera St., Cebu City.

PO1s Michael V. Echavez and Artchil C. Tero, who are on their six-month field training program, arrested Florito V. Casinillo, 24, of Sitio Banawa, Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City.

Casinillo was arrested after a brief chase that reached Colon St. after he allegedly took a Nokia 8210, worth P2,000, from Reyna D. Agodo, 18.

Casinillo was charged yesterday with theft.
